Omni Helps 78-Year-Old Widower Get Tax Debt Relief

A 78-year-old widower who owed the Internal Revenue Service approximately $55,000 contacted Omni for assistance. The client had been out of work for about 2 years, but continued to seek employment as a consultant in order to pay his bills and accrued debts. He was also supporting his 53-year-old step-daughter, who could not work due to an injury.

In April 2008, the IRS threatened to issue a levy against his social security income. Omni filed a Collection Due Process Appeal and completed an accurate financial statement while awaiting a hearing. While investigating his financial situation, Omni discovered that his home was worth approximately $1,250,000, and that he owned several vehicles, including a motor home and a classic car. Omni advised the client to liquidate his extra vehicles by listing them for sale. The client complied, and also listed his home for sale.

During the Collection Due Process hearing, Omni was able to demonstrate that the client was doing everything possible to resolve his liability, while still taking care of his basic needs and his step-daughter. The Appeals Officer placed the liability in non-collectible status, and the IRS is no longer pursuing collection of the liability.
